The Practical Use of Essential Oils Today

Essential oils seem to be mankind's first medicine. Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts show the use of essential oils over 4000 years ago. When King Tut's tomb was opened in 1922, there were 350 liters of oils found in alabaster jars, and they were still potent.

The Romans played an important role in the history of essential oils by using them in their baths, massages, temples, political buildings, homes, rugs, and on their flags. The Kings of Arabia 1000 years ago would barter and buy land, gold, and slaves, with oils. Thus they were considered at the time more valuable than gold. To top it off there are 188 references to essential oils in the bible.

Dr. Gattefosse coined the phrase ''Aromatherapy'' in 1920 after he discovered that lavender oil healed a third degree burn on his arm without leaving even a scar. He found the aromatic semi-oily resin of many flowers, trees, shrubs, bushes, roots, seeds, leaves, stems and petals all had healing properties. It takes hundreds of pounds of fresh plants to produce a small amount of essential oil. For example, it takes 5000 pounds of rose petals to produce one pound of rose oil... That's a lot of roses...

Essential oils can be extracted from different parts of plants and trees. It is even possible for more than one oil to be extracted from a single plant or tree. As an example;

Orange Peel--- Orange Oil
Orange Blossoms------Neroli Oil
Orange leaves and twigs--- Petitgrain Oil

all three of these have their own unique therapeutic effect on our bodies.

These oils effect our immune system by penetrating our cell walls to transport oxygen and nutrients inside the cell. This increase in cellular oxygen may give more support to our immune system. The properties of essential oils for sustaining and regenerating health are 1. Antifungal 2. Antibacterial 3. Antiseptic 4. Anti- infectious, 5. Immune Stimulating 6. Rejuvenates sore aching muscles 7. Increases Circulation, and 8. Opens the Chakras in the body creating a clear energy flow

Research has shown that these immune building effects occur whether we inhale them or rub them on our bodies.

Almost everywhere you go today stores are selling candles with ''Aromatherapy'' labels on them touting their effects. However check out the actual oils found in new age stores, local health food stores, or a company called Young Living essential Oils, founded by Dr. D. Gary Young. You can have a lot of fun with these and also help yourself and your partner stay healthy and happy. There is nothing like a good foot rub at the end of the day, especially when combined with these oils. Their effects on the body, mind and spirit are amazing.
