Candida Crisis

Dr. Donna Watson

One of the conditions I regularly come across in my office is ''Systemic Candida''. Males and females suffer from it however. Unfortunately, it is almost never diagnosed. The by-products of the condition manifest many times as musculoskeletal and auto-immune type of illnesses. Western physicians are quite often unaware of this hidden condition, and label their patients with a diagnosis such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic fatigue, or manic depressiveness. Many times a simple written test will provide the answers for treating previously untreatable conditions. Restoring the proper chemical balance and PH to the body is a simple task that does wonders for all types of illnesses.

What is Systemic Candida and how do we get it? Our bodies are made up of both friendly and unfriendly bacteria. When we are healthy, the friendly bacteria greatly outnumber the unfriendly bacteria, keeping our bodies inner balance in harmony. However, there are many factors that tend to weaken our immunity and upset this balance. The chemicals we add to our food and others we encounter in our environment, fast foods, the stress in our daily lifestyles, and the widespread use of traditional medicines, especially antibiotics and hormone replacement medicines, alter our chemistry. This creates a weakened state where the unfriendly bacteria can multiply quickly, resulting in symptoms such as headaches, flu, skin rashes, food allergies, depression, anxiety, muscle cramping, and other more serious conditions.

Over 40 years ago, antibiotics came to the forefront of modern medicine for the treatment of curing many diseases. They were considered miracle drugs. Doctors prescribed antibiotics for such simple problems as colds and skin acne. Antibiotics however, kill not only disease-causing bacteria, but also kill beneficial bacteria, upsetting the body's inner balance and allowing unfriendly organisms to take over.

One of the most common types of unfriendly organisms is Candida Albicans. It is a pathogenic yeast or fungus normally present on inner and outer surfaces of the body. It co-exists in our digestive tract and in a woman's vagina alongside the friendly bacteria, and must consume sugars to survive. It as importantly, resides inside the sinus cavities of both sexes and can cause chronic sinusitis. It is an opportunistic organism, and it rapidly takes advantage of any weakness in our system. So if we're eating improperly, taking antibiotics, or changing our chemistry with birth control pills or estrogen replacement drugs, we are providing the Candida with a perfect environment in which to take control.

The Sinuses, vagina, and intestines are especially vulnerable. It has been shown that after only two days on antibiotics, Candida overgrowth will occur in a susceptible person. When yeast multiplies, it produces toxic waste products, which circulate in the body and further weakens the immune system.

The overgrowth of Candida constitutes a condition we call Candidiasis. It has been linked to many symptoms, including food allergies, digestive disorders, PMS, skin rashes, chronic constipation, recurring headaches, chronic vaginitis, chronic sinusitis, chemical and environmental sensitivities, poor memory, mental fuzziness, and loss of sex drive. CRC ( Candida Related Complex ) occurs side by side with other diseases such as chronic fatigue, cancer ,AIDS, Epstein-Barr virus, bronchitis, pneumonia and immune system deficiencies.

Experts estimate that 80 million Americans have candidiasis, but the majorities don’t attribute their symptoms to this modern epidemic. Medical doctors, especially male, do not even screen for the condition, and furthermore are unaware of the consequences of Candidiasis.

To reverse this overgrowth of Candida, we must restore an inner chemical balance that prevents Candida from proliferating within us. To do this we must first kill off the bad yeast and other opportunistic parasitic organisms, and recolonize the friendly bacteria. Both of these are essential steps to reestablishing your inner balance. Friendly bacteria known as probiotics, such as lactobacillus, acidophilus, streptococcus, and bifidus, and good yeast such as Kefir, are essential to a properly functioning intestinal tract. They help your blood cells fight disease. They provide important nutrients for building the blood, assist in digestion, protect the intestinal mucosa, and help prevent diarrhea and constipation. They are also one of the most abundant sources of Vitamin B-12.

All health food stores sell bottles of probiotics, which are usually kept in the refrigerator so they won't lose their potency. It is imperative that you recolonize the friendly bacteria in the body if you have taken any form of antibiotics. Jarro acidophilus is one of my favorites for usage on a daily basis. However, when your system is under chemical stress it is a good idea to double and even triple your daily dosages. Acidophilus can also be mixed with sterile water and used as a douche, to help fight yeast infections in the vagina or to cleanse the sinuses.

If you suffer from any of the conditions listed in this article, it would be a good idea to investigate the information that is available to you. ''The Yeast Connection'' book authored by Dr. William Crook is a great book to read and has the test you can take. There are several herbs and vitamins that are great for treating the conditions and of course the dietary changes are essential for treatment of the disease.
