How to Treat Knee Pain Due to Pickleball

Written By A Place of Health - Chiropractic on July 28, 2023

Knee pain

Pickleball can cause repetitive stress injuries, joint strain, muscle sprains and strains, and inflammation. The twisting, bending, reaching, and pivoting movements that you perform while playing pickleball can aggravate existing conditions as well, like arthritis. If you’ve developed chronic or acute knee pain after playing pickleball, our chiropractor can help treat and prevent sports-related knee pain in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Prevent Knee Pain On and Off the Court

You can take preventive measures to reduce your risk of knee pain on and off the court. Make sure to do proper warm-ups and stretches before and after you play. If you develop aches and pains, joint stiffness, or muscle strain, take a day or two off from playing. When you try to play through an injury, you’ll only aggravate it more and risk a permanent or chronic injury. You can also wear a knee brace to support the knee joint and muscles while you play.

Stretch and Do Strengthening Exercises

Using a stretch called the side-lying leg lift can stretch the muscles that support the knee. While lying on your side, lift your top leg while keeping your knee straight. Position your leg slightly behind you and slowly lower your leg before lifting it again. Repeat several times, and then switch sides and do three or four more reps. Squats can strengthen your quadriceps and stabilize the knee, as can step-ups. To do a step-up, stand in front of a step that is 12 to 15 inches tall. Put your right foot in the middle of the step and balance your body for one or two seconds on your right leg as you step upwards. Keep your left leg behind your body. Repeat this while alternating legs, doing three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions for each leg.
